Loved this post. Look at the Reason video I posted on Facebook about the guy who wrote "Death of Conservatism."

I blame it on the likes of Sean Hannity. Their talking points compared to the protesters' talking points are eerily similar: repetitive without much, if any, philosophical backing.

As an Evangelical Libertarian I have to agree completely with your throw away statement about marriage being a domain of the state...for me its the pinnacle of the combination of church and state and is the root of the whole issue. What is a sacred promise before God is now a "Civil Rights" issue, very complicated. Yet countenancing conservative religious action in politics is problematic. As a graduate of Jerry Falwell's Liberty University I saw with my own eyes the elation of the religious masses in 2004 when Bush was re-elected. People went nuts, mirroring the reaction when Obama was elected. We looked to the president rather to God and ourselves to change the tone and flavor of society. We didnt want to put in the work to become the salt of the earth, so we voted in a man who just made the earth bitter. Republicanism MUST change. Social Conservatives are NOT for smaller government, they propagated an illegal war, advocate for the combination of church and state, not to mention the dangers of denominationalism that would occur if say Huckabee was in power.
Liberty was still a great school and the best years of my life.

Oh, I agree. I tell people that the system of government that existed in Jesus' time is different than what we have now - more not less is expected from them today. Every person is made responsible for the actions of it government b/c it (1) pays for the government to operate and (2) deals with the consequences of government action. Also, of course, for people of Christian, Islam, and Jewish faiths they believe that they face a judgment for all of the action and inactions in life when they pass away.

If people face these realities as "truth" then we face either people revolting at the "injustice" (self-righteous stance) or people accept those words as a call to assume their responsibilities that may just lead to the revival of a 2nd American republic.

As the gospel truth declares, all we have to do is preach this truth and the truth will take care of itself.

Lastly, since you did not make mention of it from the interview, I will note that the we are in the midst of a cultural shift in this country that will affect the "ground troops" of the political movement that will bring out change in this county. Ron Paul's GOP presidential run proved that their is a new generation of "ground troops" that comes from three sources (1) counter-culture movement (victims of HUGE government, i.e. alternative medicine, new age, technologists, music industry), (2) libertarians/3rd party movements, (3) anti-establishment/frustrated evangelicals.

Compared to the social conservatives alone, this new wave of classic liberalism stirred up by Ron Paul's candidacy is growing and becoming organized. Other the other hand, mainline social conservatives have vastly dwindled in number and are now only effective in bastions in the Midwest and deep South.

Perhaps, I can simplify this idea by saying that economic conservatives finally have "ground troops." Money after all is the common denominator.

JH, it is a rather complicated thing, and to be honest with you, there's not a single person on this planet who could give you an exact answer. I certainly am not qualified to give a "complete answer" on why poverty exists.

One thing that certainly can help to cause poverty, foster dependence generally, and perpetuate the cycle of generational poverty within a community is government involvement. Government anti-poverty programs such as public housing and welfare certainly precipitate poverty's effects, generally.

I recently wrote a final paper for an english class on exactly this subject, how government programs can effect the cycle of poverty.

I will make it into a post, but I warn you, it's quite long.

Um, so what does cause poverty? Can you give a better answer? I'm actually not disagreeing, I just was looking for a different cause to be presented after the others were refuted and the article just ended.

Lucas wrote: <em>"our country should aspire to achieve perfection, and our government to end inefficiency. neither is a practical goal at this point, but vast improvements can certainly be made."</em>

But doing this at the risk of our constitutional rights and freedoms isn't worth it. Obama's plans do nothing more than decrease freedoms and increase citizen's dependency on government. People love Obama because he feeds their sence of entitlement, not because of his plans to run the government more efficiently.

The montra of the average US citizen is "give me more and give it to me now - I want the government to take care of my every want, desire and need" Socialism doesn't work in a Capitalist society. Obama is going to destroy this nation.
